“Follow me” – Jesus, over and over in the Gospels When I heard the topic for this month’s synchroblog–”Follow”, I immediately thought of something Richard Rohr said in his book Breathing Underwater, centered on the spirituality of the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. He said “Jesus never said ‘worship me.’ Rather, when he was calling his disciples he repeatedly said ‘follow me.’” I have a theory that we’d much rather worship Jesus than follow Jesus. And for most of us, worship means singing, praying, reading the Bible, gaining insight and information, and “going to church.” These things, while valuable, are far easier than actually following Jesus. I know this well in my own life. For years I was the consummate good christian woman and knew how to do, say, and believe all the right things that supposedly-dedicated-followers-of-Jesus-should. It wasn’t that hard to do, really. You show up, mimic what other people are saying and doing, and go with the flow. That flow tends to lead us toward gaining a lot of beliefs about God but very little experience in living out God’s ways. When Jesus said “Follow me”, I really don’t think he meant “go to church, sing some songs,...

Even before I became a Christian I had crazy idea embedded inside of me that life was supposed to be pretty clear and easy if you did certain things. Maybe it was growing up with a single mom who struggled and scraped and believing that “if I got a college education, it wouldn’t be like that” or “If you don’t rock the boat, you can keep everyone happy.” The message of “Do this that and you can get this or that” was engrained in me from early on, and this was long before I became a Christ-follower. I sort of think it’s human nature. Once I made the leap toward Jesus in my early adult years, the message was actually more strongly reinforced, only with a little twist of adding “God” to it: “If you do these things, believe these things, memorize these things, God will _________.” Really, this kind of thinking makes an assumption that life is supposed to look like this: It’s ladder-like living where we keep moving forward and don’t look back. One rung after another after another, somehow expected to forget what’s behind us and keep pressing forward to what’s ahead. With enough faith, forgiveness, prayer,...

A few years ago a young white girl at a prestigious college was beaten to death by her lacrosse captain boyfriend. I remember reading the story about it because it captured the world’s attention and made it on every major news channel, even the cover of People magazine. She was beautiful, talented, and had a bright future. It was all cut short by domestic violence. The world was outraged. Last year we watched the riveting story of a white suburban party mom who was accused of killing her little girl. The grandparents were involved and it was a big hot mess, ending with her acquittal in the end. That little girl was innocent, precious, and had a bright future. It was all cut short by violence. The world was outraged. A few months ago we heard the news that a prestigious university had a football coach who was sexually molesting young, vulnerable boys. The boys he was violating weren’t from strong families with education and money. They were from a program for troubled kids, the kinds on the margins, the often forgotten and neglected ones. When this story broke loose, riots ensued, not riots about the injustice that had happened,...
